Thought this might silhouette as the measured DR was 14 stops. Placed the darkest shadows 5 stops under and there’s still detail in the brightest leaves on the tree to the left and in the shadows. Bonkers.

I was out with Issa Farhoud and Nigel Morton when I made this and it was one of those moments where I was walking by and everything just lit up in front of me in an area of the forest that I’m very familiar with – I’d even looked at making a picture from virtually where I made this one on at least one other occasion.

The scramble to get everything set up and focused before the light disappeared was a challenge – by the time I’d set up, the light had disappeared, but it briefly returned for long enough to make a couple of exposures. Location’s not far from my gnarled tree image.

That’s super smart – the way you captured detail in the whole scene except for the specular highlights on the leaves – what more can you ask for!

Very nice, the light through the bracken is a lovely touch.

Just glancing at the image it had to be Portra, lovely back light on the bracken & some nice muted colours in the leaves,
    Don

Fabulous depth and light throughout the image, you can almost feel yourself climbing through the fern and trees to reach the other end of the wood.

Even viewed on black you can see loads of detail on the trunks. Excellent!

So much to look at in this image. There’s a real sense of being drawn into this one – as already said, the light is absolutely magnificent and the principal elements have been alligned so as to invite the eye to wander through the frame. Superb work once again, Tim.

Beautiful, gentle shot. As you say, amazing range of light in here. You’re resolved the complexity very well indeed – my eye is led around the frame perfectly – great range of varying greens too.

That’s great Tim, it’s wonderful when everything comes together like that and you’ve done a great job in catching the light. I hope you had time to savour the moment!

What I want to know is: where are Issa and Nigel hiding then?…. (Flickr is telling me ‘… a shot of…’

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

    [http://www.flickr.com/photos/30957072@N02] haha :)

Btw, I did a scout this afternoon and the colour’s starting to pick up in some places, but others are *still* very green – could be a late blossom, but there might be enough for a trip next weekend. I’ll be checking periodically this week, as I may not be around the first week of November as I’ve got to go to Taiwan on a job! After all the effort, I may miss the best of the colour, but I can’t turn away the TW trip.

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/timsmalley] I was there yesterday! My wife took the kids out so I just dropped everything and went. I couldn’t help thinking "who hit the pause button on all the colour?"
Wow, Taiwan sounds like a great trip…and you’re being paid to go?! I’m starting to think I’m doing the wrong thing here…

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/30957072@N02] I was thinking the same about the colour – it’s there in patches still, but *very* green. The frost last week didn’t accelerate things. TW’s a paid trip, yeah – flights aren’t booked yet, but should be next week… just confirming everything’s lined up.

Thats turned out very nice Tim, do like the almost Silhouetted tree trunks.

Have the colours changed yet – thinking of going there this weekend.

Thanks Issa, it’s a bit green still – think I might be at Burnham on Saturday and not sure if I will be out on Sunday as well. Probably up there on Friday again.

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/issafarhoud] Hi Issa, I was there two days ago…still very green. Will post a couple of images tonight…
