I made this image on a weekend up in the Peaks with Paul Morton at the start of last month – this was about halfway through an unplanned five hour excursion up a side valley on Kinder Scout. We initially planned to do a recce of the area – I suggested just taking compact cameras initially, much to Paul’s (and my later amusement) – but in the end we carried full kit.
I’m seriously glad that I did as it was quite a find – I’ll be heading back up there in the winter, that’s for sure. I had a relatively productive hour at the start of the walk, but then struggled to find anything that worked for quite a while. I was waiting for Paul to catch up as I’d walked quite a way ahead in hope of finding something while looking around at the rowan tree in the bottom of this image and I ran out of water.
I decided to climb a bit higher in search of some some fresh water to fill my bottle with once Paul had caught up and spotted this tapestry of colours from what was a very steep bank so I made my way back down to grab my gear and climb back up through the knee-high heather. Coming down with all my gear was the fun part – I was lucky not to roll down.
A magnificent patchwork of autumn colour, and some wonderful lines too – I especially like that S-curve starting from the foreground trees. Really beautifully done, Tim.
Wonderful Tim, I’ve waited over 5 weeks to see how this one turned out, and it sure was worth the wait. Using Velvia seems to have pulled every last bit of colour out of the scene, especially in the heather. I’m sure this valley will be a real gem in January/Feb with some snow & ice knocking around – you up for it??
A wonderful composition Tim. That far line in the top right, a hedge I assume, works as a great natural stop for the eye. Good range of Autumnal colours and plants in there too.

Is the Pope catholic? Yes, I’m definitely up for some more of this valley with snow and ice
very pleasing to look at, there is a lovely rhythm to the shot which guides the eye through the frame. i also like the palette of different colours in the foliage of all the trees, nice bit of contrast.

A beautifully crafted composition.
Beautiful patchwork of colours, and I like the diagonal composition from bottom left.

Lovely depth to this and each tree offers something different either in shape or in colour. Beautiful.
